At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
