The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. However when an unknown lady goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities through this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. Contacted by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several child abductions has left the children anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor plays the venal Jim, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Chastain succeeds to present the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry by the same director delivers a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to identify a mole among the team from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of understated style, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment.
